Zimbabwe Afro-Pop Legend Oliver Mtukudzi to perform at HotHouseJul 8, 2003

Hailed by Entertainment Weekly as the Otis Redding of Zimbabwe, Oliver Mtukudzi is a giant of African pop. Lovingly called "Tuku" for short, Mtukudzi began recording in the mid-1970s as a member of Wagon Wheels, a band that featured another HotHouse favorite, Thomas Mapfumo. After Wagon Wheels rolled to fame in Southern Africa, Mtukudzi formed Black Spirits, the band who has backed him throughout his career.

Heavily influenced by chimurenga, a genre pioneered by Mapfumo and inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano), Mtukudzi incorporates pop influences, South African mbaqanga, the energetic Zimbabwean pop style JIT, and the traditional kateke drumming of his clan, the Korekore, into his music. The lyrics of his songs, performed in the Shona language of Zimbabwe as well as in English, invariably deal with the social, political and economic issues facing Africa, but Mtukudzi's humor and optimism create an appeal that crosses generations and continents.

Who: Oliver Mtukudzi and Black Spirits
    Where: HotHouse, 31 E. Balbo
    When: Sunday July 13, 8:30pm, 21+
Tickets: $20. Advance tickets are available online at www.hothouse.net or by calling (800)594.TIXX

    Youssou N'Dour Cancels US TourMar 8, 2003

Youssou N'Dour just announced that he has canceled his US as a result of the US's impending war with Iraq.

Youssou N'Dour says, "It is my strong conviction that the responsibility for disarming Iraq should rest with the United Nations. As a matter of conscience I question the United States government's apparent intention to commence war in Iraq. I believe that coming to America at this time would be perceived in many parts of the world - rightly or wrongly - as support for this policy, and that, as a consequence, it is inappropriate to perform in the US at this juncture."

Youssou N'dour will be touring the US and Canada starting in late march. I have begun to add tour dates to the calendar. Until then you can view the full list here.
